Hindi Varnamala - Hindi Alphabets

Hi, Namaste & Welcome back!

A letter is known as 'Varn' (वर्ण) and the alphabet chart is known as 'varnamala' (वर्णमाला). Vowels are called 'Swar' (स्वर) & Consonants are called 'Vyanjan' (व्यंजन).

There are 36 consonants in Hindi.
There are 13 vowels/swar in Hindi. And they are:

अ आ इ ई उ ऊ ऋ ए ऐ ओ औ अं अः
ah aah e ee u uu ri a i o ou/au am aha

According to the time taken to pronounce, these vowels are classified into three types:

3)plut (प्लुत) – these are longer vowels and take much longer time in pronouncing them.

Based on the source of the sound of the vowel, they are again classified into anunasik (अनुनासिक) and niranunasik (निरनुनसिक) swar.

  11. Hello. I am from AP and I am a web/mobile app developer. I was taught Hindi in school but never really taught using it in daily conversations or with people around as all of us speak in our native language in the school/outside. I even forgot numbers, vocabulary and few letters due to non usage and I really feel grateful to find your blogs from 2010 being really helpful in learning Hindi without mistakes or more friendly way with English titles or stories. Now there are people around me and I am noticing how important Hindi is and the change it gonna bring in me or achieve my future goals or be confident when travelling in India to start conversations. Now, I started to learn from the beginning again and like to be comfortable talking to anyone by next 6 months. I hope I will cover all the articles in this journey. Thanks for making this <3
