Simple questions - I

Beginners,those who plan to travel and had travelled to India or has friends who speak Hindi might have wondered how to ask certain questions. Here are few simple questions which are used frequently.

Who is that? यह कौन है? yah kaun hai?
What is this? यह क्या है? yah kya hai?
What is that? वह क्या है? vah kya hai?
Where is it? वह कहाँ है? vah kahan hai?
Where is Roy? रॉय कहाँ है? Roy kahan hai?
How much is it? यह कितने की है? yah kitne ki hai?
Who are you? आप कौन है? aap kaun hai?
What is your name? आपका नाम क्या है? aapka nam kya hai?
Where are you from? आप कहाँ के रहने वाले हैं? aap kahan ke rahne vale hain?
Which country are you from? आप किस देस के हैं? aap kis des ke hain?
How old are you? आप की उमर क्या है? aap ki umar kya hai?
What is your job? आप क्या काम करते हैं? aap kya kaam karte hain?
What are you studying? आप क्या पढ़ते हैं? aap kya padhte hain?
What is wrong? क्या बात है? Kya bat hai?
Do you speak Hindi? क्या आप हिन्दी बोल सकते हैं? kya aap hindi bol sakte hain?
What time is it? क्या समय हुआ? kya samay hua?

कौनसा/कौनसे/कौनसी ( kaunsa/kaunse/kaunsi)  means “which”? कौनसा (kaunsa) is used in case of masculine singular; कौनसे/ (kaunse) is used for masculine plural; and कौनसी (kaunsi) is used for both feminine singular and plural.

1)      Which is your house? -  आपका घर कौनसा है?( aapka ghar kaunsa hai)

2)      Which room did you get? – आपको कौनसा कमरा मिला (aapko kaunsa kamra mila)?

3)      Which is the birth place of Gandhi?-  गाँधीजी का जन्म स्थान कौनसा है (Gandhiji ka janm sthaan kaunsa hai)?

कौनसे  (kaunse)

1)      Which cocks’ tail is 20 feet? - कौनसे मुर्गे की पूंछ बीस फुट होती है? (kaunse murgi ki poonch bees foot hoti hai)?

2)      Which flower do you like? – आपको कौनसे फूल पसंद हैं (aapko kaunse phool pasand haim)?

कौनसी (kaunsi)

1)      Which is your star sign? - आपकी राशि कौनसी है (aap ki raasi kaunsi hai)?

2)      Which is your book? -  आपकी पुस्तक कौनसी है? (aapki pustak kaunsi hai)

3)      Which is the most costliest fish in the world? -  दुनिया की सबसे कीमती मछली कौनसी है (Duniya ki sabse keemati machali kaunsi hai)?

कैसा/ कैसे/ कैसी (kaisa/kaise/kaisi) all means “How or What (of what kind)”.

कैसा is used for denoting masculine singular,

कैसे is used for denoting masculine plural , and

कैसी is used for denoting feminine singular and plural

1)      How is weather today? -  आज कैसा मौसम है  (Aaj kaisa mausam hai)?

2)      How is Ravi? - रवि कैसा है (Ravi kaisa hai)?

3)      How is your son? - आपका बेटा कैसा है (Aapka beta kaisa hai)?

कैसे

1)      How are you?  - आप कैसे हैं (Aap Kaise Hain)? -- formal

2)      How are you? – तुम कैसे हो (Tum kaise ho)? – informal

3)      How do you say "...."? -  "..." कैसे कहते हैं? ("..." kaise kahate hai)? 

4)      How to avert the public’s attention from terrorism? - आतंकवाद से जनता का ध्यान कैसे हटाया जाए (aatangvaad se janta ka dhyaan kaise hataya jaye)।

कैसी

1)      तुम कैसी हो? – How are you (tum kaisi ho)?

2)      आपकी बेटियाँ कैसी हैं? - How are your daughters? – (Aapki betiyam kaisi haim)

3)      How does his/her eyes look like? - उसकी आंखे देखने में कैसी होंगी (uski aankem dekhne main kaisi hogi)?
