Yah- Vah Sentences: Use of This and That

Hello and Welcome back!

In our previous post, we saw how to use These (Ye) and Those (Ve) in Hindi. Do you remember that I told you  This, That, These, and Those are demonstratives and are used to denote nouns in a sentence. In case you haven't seen that post, kindly go and refer to that post after this. 

This refers to a singular noun that is near in time or space. We also use this for uncountable nouns that we treat as singular. The noun that follows must be written as a singular noun.  

यह एक विलक्षण संज्ञा को संदर्भित करता है जो समय या स्थान के निकट है। हम इसका उपयोग बेशुमार संज्ञाओं के लिए भी करते हैं जिन्हें हम एकवचन मानते हैं। इसके बाद आने वाली संज्ञा को एकवचन संज्ञा के रूप में लिखा जाना चाहिए। यह अक्सर समय के बारे में बात करने के लिए प्रयोग किया जाता है।

 

यह- है (Yeh- Hai) sentences

All sentences starting with यह (Yeh) ends in है (hai) in present tense.

English	Hindi	Transliteration
This is a book.	यह किताब है	Yeh kitaab hai
This is a flower.	यह फूल है	Yeh phool hai
This is a house.	यह घर है	Yeh ghar hai
This is a pen.	यह कलम है	Yeh kalam hai
This is a child.	यह बच्चा है	Yeh bachcha hai
This peda is delicious. (singular noun)	यह पेड़ा स्वादिष्ट है।	Yah peda svaadisht hai
I want this dress for Diwali. (singular noun)	मुझे यह ड्रेस दिवाली के लिए चाहिए।	Mujhe yah dress diwali ke liye chaahiye
What is this music you’re listening to? (singular uncountable noun)	यह कौन सा संगीत आप सुन रहे हैं?	Yah kaun sa sangeet aap sun rahe hain?

That is used for singular or uncountable nouns. इसका उपयोग एकवचन या बेशुमार संज्ञाओं के लिए किया जाता है।

वह- है (Vah- Hai) sentences

In the present tense, all the sentences starting with वह (Vah) ends in है (hai).

English	Hindi	Transliteration
That is a book.	वह किताब है	Vah kitaab hai
That is a flower.	वह फूल है	Vah phool hai
That is a house.	वह घर है	Vah ghar hai
That is a pen.	वह कलम है	Vah kalam hai
That is a school.	वह स्कूल है	Vah school hai

Test: 

Try forming simple sentences.

1) This is a boy.  

Hint: boy = ladka 

2) That is a girl.

Hint: girl = ladki

3) This is a mouse.

Hint: mouse = chooha

4) That is a candy.

candy =  mithai/mittayi
