In this post, I've used a film dialogue from an old Hindi movie - "Karma", in learning some new words in Hindi. My belief and experience are that we learn languages the best using unconventional methods that do not feel like learning. Watching movies is one great technique one can use to learn languages. As a kid, I've had a liking to learn languages, and I used to watch most of the regional movies that came on Doordarshan on Sunday afternoons. Those were the days, subtitles were shown on the regional language movies, and that helped understand the general story. But above all, I could pick up words and usages from here and there.
Another thing that I've experienced is that if you have a basic understanding of the Sanskrit language, which is the mother of all world languages, you can understand a lot of words from other languages, especially Indian languages.
Haven't we seen kids learning languages without any special classes merely by listening to what others around them speak and by using it in communicating with others? Use the same technique - put it to use, without any qualms or fear of making mistakes, or worrying if it's right or not.
This lesson is helpful for beginners.
A Dialogue from the Film Karma:
Scenario:
Mr. Tripathi, a minister and a friend arrives, and he is welcomed by all the family
members (mother, two sons & daughter in law). A small girl in the family
goes to fetch the father, who is the girl’s grandfather from his office room in
the house.
Conversation:
माँ: अरे, त्रिपाठीजी आ गये | (Are Tripathiji aa gaye)
त्रिपाठी: नमस्ते भाभी, नमस्ते! (namaste bhabhi, namaste)
माँ: नमस्ते, भाई साहब! भाई साहब, आप मंत्री क्या
बन गये, हमारे तो घर का
रास्ता ही भूल गये | (Namaste
Bhai sahab. Bhai sahab, Aap mantri kya ban gaye, hamare to ghar ka rasta hi
bhool gaye. )
त्रिपाठी: ठीक कहती है भाभी | यह मंत्री का जोड़ा पहनने के लिए घर संसार से तो त्याग लेना ही पड़ता है| देखिए न क्या ज़िंदगी है - घर से दिल्ली, दिल्ली से घर, घर से दिल्ली ....| (theek kahti hai bhabhi. Yeh
mantri ka joda pehanne ke liye ghar sansar se to tyaag lena hi padta hai.
Dekhiye na kya zindagi hai - ghar se dilli, dilli se ghar, ghar se dilli...)
बेटा १: पाई लागो, चाचाजी ! (Pai lago, chachaji)
त्रिपाठी: अरे अरे! जीते रहो, अनिल, जीते रहो! मुबारक हो ! (Are are! Jeete raho anil, jeete raho! Mubarak ho)
बेटा २: नमस्ते अंकल | (Namaste uncle!)
लड़की : दादाजी, दादाजी, मंत्री दादा आए है | (Dadaji,
dadaji, mantri dada aaye hai)
Translation:
Mother: Mr. Tripathi is here.
Tripathi: Greetings, sister-in-law , Greetings
Mother: Hello brother! Ever since you
became a minister you’ve forgotten the way to our house (forgotten us).
Tripathi: You are right. To carry out the
responsibilities of a minister, one is forced to neglect domestic
responsibilities. See what a life! I have to travel between home and Delhi
Son 1: Greetings uncle! (touching the
feet)!
Tripathi: God Bless you, Anil!
Congratulations!
Son 2: Hello Uncle!
Girl: Grandpa, grandpa, Minister grandpa has
come.

So, as I said in the beginning, watch movies to learn Hindi. I suggest you watch slightly old movies because the language used is pure Hindi. Nowadays, the language in movies has become modern and mix of many other languages. Parents, kindly allow your child to watch good movies. It won't harm them. 😉
