वचन (Vachan) in Hindi: How To Turn Singular To Plural

In this post, we are going to learn the rules of changing singular nouns to plural forms. In our previous posts, we have already learned some singular- plural nouns, right? If you haven’t seen that yet, check it out here.
 

Masculine Nouns
Some masculine nouns can be changed to its plural form by changing the  at the end to  .

Examples:-

Singular

Plural

लड़का (ladka) (Boy)

लड़के (ladke) (boys)

कपड़ा (kapda) (cloth)

कपड़े (Kapde) (clothes)

कमरा (kamra) (Room)

कमरे  (kamre) (rooms)

घोड़ा (ghoda) (Horse)

घोड़े (ghode) (horses)

पत्ता (patta) (leaf)

पत्ते (patte) (leaves)

कुत्ता (kutta) (Dog)

कुत्ते (kutte) (dogs)

बेटा (beta) (Son)

बेटे (bete) (sons)

रास्ता (rasta) (Way)

रास्ते (raste) (ways)

 

But there are exceptions to this rule.

Words like मामानानाचाचाकाकापितादेवतायोद्धाराजाजामता remains the same for both singular and plural.

For masculine nouns other than ending in  sound, the singular and plural forms remain the same.

Examples:-

Singular

Plural

गुरु (guru) (teacher/tutor)

गुरु

मुनि (muni) (saint)

पशु (pashu) (animal)

घर (ghar) (house)

बालक (balak) (boy/child)

बिन्दु (bindu) (dot/point)

आदमी (aadmi) (person/man/husband)

विद्यार्थी (vidhyarti) (student)

विद्यार्थी

 

Some of the nouns ending in  ( except words of Sanskrit origin),  that are followed by ने,  से,  में (vibhakti) require that you add ओं at the end to make it plural.

Examples:-

हाथों (hathom) मेंसेके (ne, mein, se)

घर (ghar) (Home)

घरों (gharom) मेंसेके (ne, mein, se)

डाकू (daku) (Bandit)

डाकुओं (dakuom) नेमेंसे (ne, mein, se)

आँख (aankh) (eye)

आँखों (aankhom) नेमेंसे (ne, mein, se)

साधु (sadhu) (Sage)

साधुओं (sadhuom)(Sages) नेमेंसे (ne, mein, se)

 

Feminine Nouns
Feminine nouns ending with  can be changed to its plural form by changing  to एं

Singular

Plural      

आँख (aankh) (Eye)

आँखे (aankem) (eyes)

बात (baat) (talk)

बातें (baathem) (talks)

पुस्तक (pustak) (Book)

पुस्तकें (pustakem) (books)

किताब (kitaab) (book)

किताबें (kitaabem) (books)

रात (raat) (Night)

रातें (raatem) (nights)

बहन (bahen) (Sister)

बहनें (bahenem) (sisters)

बांह (banh) (Arm)

बांहें (banhein) (arms)

 

Feminine nouns ending with  can be changed to its plural form by changing  to एँ

Singular

Plural

लता (latha) (climber)

लताएँ (lathayem) (climbers)

माता (Matha) (mother)

माताएँ (mathayem) (mothers)

कन्या (Kanya) (girl)

कन्याएँ (kanyayem) (girls)

धारा (dhaara) (flow)

धाराएँ (dhaarayem) (flows)

 

Feminine nouns ending in  sound can be changed to its plural form by adding याँ at the end of the word.

नीति (neeti) (Policy)

नीतियाँ (neetiyam) (policies)

तिथि (tithi) ( date)

तिथियाँ (tithiyam) (dates)

लिपि (lipi) (Script)

लिपियाँ (lipiyam) (scripts)

रीति (reeti) (process)

रीतियाँ (reetiyam) (processes)

गति (gati) (Speed)

गतियाँ (gatiyam) (speeds)

प्रति (prati) (Copy)

प्रतियाँ (pratiyam) (copies)

राशि (rashi) (sign)

राशियाँ (rashiyam) (signs)

नदी (nadi) (river)

नदियाँ (nadiyam) (rivers)

जाती (jaati) (race/sex)

जातियाँ (jaatiyam) (races/sex)

 

Feminine nouns ending in  sound can be changed to its plural form by changing to and add याँ at the end of the word.

Singular

Plural

नारी (nari) (Woman)

नारियाँ (nariyam) (women)

चाबी (chabi) (Key)

चाबियाँ (chabiyam) (keys)

नदी (nadi) (River)

नदियाँ (nadiyam) (rivers)

सीढ़ी (seedhi) (Stair)

सीढियाँ (seedhiyam) (stairs)

सखी (sakhi) (Fem. friend)

सखियाँ (sakhiyam) (fem. friends)

 


Feminine nouns ending in या can be changed to its plural form by changing by adding a chandra bindu () to या.

Singular

Plural

चिड़िया (chidiya) (Sparrow)

चिड़ियाँ (chidiyam) (Sparrows)

बुढ़िया (budiya) (Old woman)

बुढ़ियाँ (budiyam) (Old women)

गुड़िया (Gudiya) (Doll)

गुड़ियाँ (gudiyam) (Dolls)

पुड़िया (pudiya) (Small packet)

पुड़ियाँ (pudiyam) (Small packets)

 

Feminine nouns ending in  can be changed to its plural form by changing-by-changing to and adding एँ.

Singular

Plural

लता (latha) (Creeper)

लताएँ (lathayem) (Creepers)

वधू (vadhu) (Bride)

वधुएँ (vadhuem) (Brides)

वस्तु (Vastu) (Thing)

वस्तुएँ (vastuem) (Things)

बहू (Bahu) (Daughter-in-law)

बहुएँ (bahuem) (Daughters-in-law)
